Þoka frá Hólum
Þoka frá Hólum is the holder of the Gletta trophy this year and has a total BLUP score of 124 points. This year, nine mares qualify for the minimum limit and of those Þoka is on top. Þoka is born in 1993 and the breeder of Þoka is Hólar College but presently the owners of the mare are Ingar and Inga Jensen who live in Sweden. On the other hand Þoka is here in Iceland and Þórarin Eymundsson is her caretaker.
Ingar and Inga Jensen bought Þoka in 2001. “For a long time we had been looking for a „super“ mare to be our primary breeding mare in Iceland. Immediately we liked Þoka, she was a first prize mare and we felt that her bloodline on both sides very exciting, especially her mother lineage” Ingar said, but Þoka is out of Vafi frá Kýrholti and the honor winning prize mare Þrá frá Hólum.
Ingar and Inga prepare carefully the choice of a stallion with Þoka. “We do not take any chances and therefore we always choose stallions with high assessment and especially the stallions with good tölt or stallions which have proven themselves with good offspring. Of course we do not think it is sufficient to only have a high score, we have to like them also.” Ingar says but in the last few years Þoka has been led under Orri frá Þúfu, Aron frá Strandarhöfða, Keilir frá Miðsitju, Gustur frá Hóli, Álfur frá Selfossi og Krákur frá Blesastöðum 1A.
Þoka has been returning horses with great talent into the horse breeding here in Iceland and her offspring have been successful in competitions and received high breeding assessments. Þoka´s oldest offspring, Þóra frá Prestbæ who is out of Inga and Ingar’s horse breeding, was on top in the class of oldest mares at Landsmót at Vindheimamelar in 2011. When they are asked what it the offspring of Þoka have in common with her, Ingar says that it is her brave. “Her offspring are very confident and brave which Þoka is also. Also Þoka´s offspring have great and safe clean gaits”. Ingar and Inga put great emphasis on the offspring from Þoka to receive good in-riding and training and the horses that have been trained have all been trained by Þórarin Eymundsson.
“We do not plan to keep all of Þokas offspring ourselves, but we do want to see them grow and hope that they will be presented for breeding assessment. We also hope that they will participate in competitions, like for example Þeyr and Þóra. But is the breeding of Ingar and Inga a large one? “In Iceland we are only breeding from the mother and daughter Þoka and Þóra and we do not plan on a large horse breeding, we rather want to concentrate on quality. In Sweden, we have five first prize mares and some of them will be used for breeding. Þilja, the daughter of Þoka was transported here in 2006 and we plan to breed from her next year” Ingar and Inga are horse riders themselves and therefore they have a few competition horses they can enjoy.
