Action í Kálfholt
The winter chores at the well known breeding farm Kálfholt í Ásahreppur is well under way…
A very generous group of horses has recently been taken into the stables. There is room for about 60 horses in the stable which is run by the father and son Ísleifur and Jónas Jónsson. Among the most interesting stallions is Kapall who is four year old and is the offspring of Hágangur frá Narfastöðum and the gæðinga mare Syrpa who is the daughter of Asi. This is a very handsome young foal which had recently been taken inside the stables when the messenger from Eiðfaxi knocked on their door recently.
The son of Tígull, named Vökull who is 5 years old is one of the horses who should have been assessed last summer. His mother is the known breeding mare Dimma frá Kálfholti, and he is also very promising.
The son of Aron should also be mentioned. He is a tall horse with handsome male and tail and is almost four years old. A few other young horses are at the farm where about 7 to 10 foals are born every year. Ísleifur is the instructor for the people who belong to the Riding club at Flúðir and Hella.
He has works both as a trainer and starting young horses and for example always has a trainee from Hólar school work with him in the beginning of the New Year. Brynja his sister and her daughter Ingunn Birna work within the horse sector but individually though. And so are Eyrún his sister and her husband Steigrímur Jónsson.
Therefore there is great action amongst the people in Kálfholt where horsemanship is both a way of life as well as their work.
