Irrecoverable loss for Freyja at Votmúli

“I was driving at 80 km pr hour on the straight highway. I cannot explain how this happened, and why the horse trailer became disconnected from the car…..

There was no pulling or jerking in the car, and the safety chain broke instantly. There is no sign of damage on the trailer or connections to it. The cotter pin is still in the same place and the lock still works.  The trailer sphere has scratch marks on it but is in good shape otherwise. I have no explanation for what has happened” Freyja Hilmarsdóttir in Votmúli says, after having experienced a tragic accident on the highway last Monday evening, when driving the main road south just east of the horse farm Ingólfhvolur. She was on her way home with two stallions; Styrkur and Jósteinn frá Votmúla, after having presented them in a county show in the west part of Iceland at Mið-Fossar.

Styrkur was seriously injured in the accident and had to be put down right away. Jósteinn is alive, but three spinal bones on his front shoulders are broken. “His shoulders are badly swollen but otherwise he is doing rather well. Not much is known about injuries in these areas, and for example they are only recently being x-rayed. He needs to rest for six weeks, and then we have to see what the next steps will be“Freyja says. When asked, she says that both horses were life insured but the sentimental loss is irrecoverable. The late gæðingur was both trained and bred by her. “Styrkur was recovering from injuries which happened when he was young. He had been treated and last winter he had shown great progress. He had become quite amazing  and I could see that he would bloom so to speak next year. Many people showed interest in him. This is both sad and hurtful; my horses are like my children.”

Freyja says that she is experiencing great empathy and compassion from people both here and abroad, and wants to thank all those who have shown their concern and sympathy.
