Bergur and Olil awarded horse breeders of the year

The hall at Hlégarður in Mosfellsbær was pack full at the location where the Horse breeding conference „Hrossarækt 2012“ took place. The horse breeding year was reviewed; the owners of honor winning mares were honored and the horse with the highest BLUP points of the year was awarded. And also the horse breeders Bergur Jónsson and Olil Amble, at Syðri-Gegnishólum received the title horse breeders of the year 2012.

Guðlaugur Antonsson counselor of horse breeding at BÍ reviewed the horse breeding year and breeding assessment results and this year’s breeding evaluations. A total of 1590 horses were assessed in a total of 2184 assessments in the year 2012 in a total of 16 shows. A total of 46% horses were 4 and 5 years old. A total of 222 horses received the minimum requirement for participation at Landsmót and a total of 204 were present.

The highest assessed mares of the year in each age group were:
•    4 years old: Erla frá Halakoti – total score 8,26
•    5 years old: Fura frá Hellu – total score 8,46
•    6 years old: Kolka frá Hákoti – total score 8,69
•    7 years and older: Álfadrottning frá Austurkoti and Gletta frá Þjóðólfshaga were even with a total score of 8.53.

The highest assessed horses in each age group were:
•    4 years old: Nói frá Stóra-Hofi – total score 8,51
•    5 years old: Arion frá Eystra-Fróðholti – total score 8,67
•    6 years old: Hrannar frá Flugumýri II – total score 8,85
•    7 years and older: Seiður frá Flugumýri II – total score of 8,63

The mare with the highest assessed conformation was Frásögn frá Dýrfinnustöðum with a score of 8,88 but in the class of horses there was Krókur frá Ytra-Dalsgerði with a score of 8,66.

A total of four horses received a total score over 9.0 in the year. The highest scoring horse in the class of stallion was Hrannar frá Flugumýri II who received a score of 9,16. Óskasteinn frá Íbishóli received a score of 9,12 and Trymbill frá Stóra-Ási a score of 9,01. Spá frá Eystra-Fróðholti is the only mare who received over 9.0 for qualities in the year, a score of 9,03.

The owners of Hrannar frá Flugumýri were awarded prize winnings for the highest total score of the year and his rider Þorvaldur Árni Þorvaldsson received a prize for his score for talent.

The owners of the honor winning prize mare of the year were awarded and it was Þórarinn Eymundsson and his wife who received the Gletta trophy on behalf of the owners of Þoka frá Hólum, Ingu and Ingar Jensen. The owners of a total of thirteen horse breeding farms received acknowledgement for good results. These were the horse breeding farms Auðsholtshjáleiga, Berg, Blesastaðir 1A, Eystra-Fróðholt, Hlemmiskeið 3, Fet, Kvestir, Lækjarbotnar, Prestsbakki, Skipaskagi, Skrúður, Syðri Gegnishólar and Ytra-Vallholt and they all have different objectives but all of them have received remarkable results in the year.

The ones receiving the title “Horse breeders of the year” were Bergur Jónsson and Olil Amble at Syðri-Gegnishólum for their great achievements during the year. One of their achievements, which should be mentioned, is that Álfur frá Selfossi, is out of Olils horse breeding, and received the Sleipnir trophy as well as the mare Framkvæmd frá Ketilsstöðum, from Bergur horse breeding and received honor winning prize for offspring. A total of 25 horses from these horse breeders were presented during the year, ten of them received a minimum score for participation at Landsmót and five of them ended in a prize position. The average age of presented horses was 5,76  and the average total score was 8,12. Flugnir frá Ketilsstöðum was in 9th place in the class of oldest stallions, Aðaldís frá Syðri-Gegnishólum was in 9th place in the class of 6 year old mares. Strokkur was in 6th place in the class of 5 year old stallions, Mugga was in 9th place in the class of 5 year old mares and Álfhildur, the full sister of Álfur was in 7th place in the class of 4 year old mares.
